WOD Powders Athlete Interview: Sammy Rockett

We're joined by ex gymnast turned Crossfit athlete Sammy Rockett. Let's find out more about her!

Sammy Rockett

How did you discover CrossFit?

Sammy: I did Great Britain gymnastics for over a decade of my life and following my retirement in 2012, I then had to have full ankle reconstruction. I had a period of around 6 years where I didn’t enjoy exercise until one day a friend at work told me to come to a class at a CrossFit gym called ‘Sweat 101’.  This was mostly high intensity workouts designed for a good sweat but as it was in the CrossFit gym, I soon got the bug when I touched a barbell and snatched for the first time! I’d say I haven’t looked back, but I did a small stint as just an Olympic Weightlifter too from 2020-2022. But it’s fair to say, CrossFit definitely has my heart!

What was your motivation to really pursue weightlifting & CrossFit?
Sammy: It’s truly my escape from my day-to-day life. Like most of us in this World, I have a job with a lot of responsibility and work long days. CrossFit for me is my outlet, it’s the place I go after work which is just for me, and I try to make that the best hour of my day. My past in gymnastics also made me very competitive and I love the feeling of improving myself, no matter how long it takes!

Is there a coach or athlete you look up to and why?
Sammy: I really do love Laura Horvarth – I love what she stands for and how she celebrates what her body can do and reminds women especially that our bodies are worth far more than what they weigh or look like!

Outside of CrossFit, my true sporting idol is and has always been Valentino Rossi, the Moto GP rider – his dedication to his craft and sportsmanship is something I’ve watched and adored since I was a young girl!

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sports?
Sammy: No, it’s basically my whole identity. Jokes – I love going for walks with my dog, holidays and city breaks, going to see live music, reading (smutty) books and spending £6 a day on a silly little latte.

Which supplements do you take daily from WOD Powders?
Sammy: Will never not train without my Wod Fuel, Creatine and L-Glutamine combo!
I use the strawberry whey most days too, either in a post workout shake or in smoothies and oats!

Which is your favourite flavour by WOD Powders?
Sammy: The tropical Wod Fuel is my favourite, closely followed by Hawaiian Punch (maybe I’m biased because my face is on the side of it!)

What’s your go to training music?
Sammy: It’s got to be Fred Again, or if I am ever in the gym alone, I will put The 1975 on.

What do you enjoy doing on a rest day?

Sammy: I absolutely love walking my dog and going somewhere I can get a really nice coffee – dog friendly of course so that Rufus can have a pup cup.

My mid-week rest day is usually a working day, so I take this day to make sure I get away from my desk at lunch and do a longer walk too as it always helps me recover.

If I get the time, I also like to go to the Spa Garden an Iveridge Hall as they do a cheap recovery hour where I can make use of the heated pool, sauna and steam room.

Top 3 Favourite food & drinks?

Sammy:
1. DIET COKE FOREVER – if you follow me, you know this is true love.
2. Sushi – I am a huge sushi lover
3. Mini eggs – I know this isn’t particularly healthy, but the smell of a bag of mini eggs alone is enough to turn my day around

What do you see yourself accomplishing in the future?

Sammy: I truly do just want to get better in this sport and to carry on enjoying training and competing with my friends as much as I can. Starting and being involved in CrossFit is something which has helped my mentality around my body image, especially with my gymnastics past and I want to carry on celebrating what my body can accomplish whilst I am on this journey. I think it’s easy to get caught up in the comparison game in this World, I am very guilty of this, but I want to carry on working in my own lane and be the best athlete my lifestyle can allow me! Grateful to have Tom and WOD Powders who support me with this and offer incredible opportunities to represent the brand in competition.
